Publication Book Design | 2025
Beyond the Needle is a passion project that explores the unexpected but powerful overlap between tattooing and graphic design. Inspired by my personal love of tattoos and professional background in design, this book was created to bridge two worlds that are often seen as opposites, ink on skin and pixels on screen. At its core, Beyond the Needle makes the case that both tattooing and design require similar skills: the ability to listen, adapt, plan with intention, and bring a client’s vision to life through meaningful visuals.
The book pairs personal reflection with practical insight, demystifying the tattoo process for newcomers while drawing parallels to the creative workflows used in branding and design. Through accessible writing, personal anecdotes, and visual storytelling, Beyond the Needle serves as both an educational guide and a celebration of alternative design. Visually, the book embraces a bold, edgy aesthetic that reflects the spirit of tattoo culture, raw, expressive, and authentic. It’s designed to speak to creatives, clients, and anyone curious about the artistry behind tattoos. With this project, I wanted to honor both crafts while highlighting their shared values and the deeply personal impact they can have on people’s lives.
Inspo behind the design
Inspired by the deep connection between tattooing and design, the book’s visual identity blends bold, alternative aesthetics with structured, intentional design. Gritty, expressive typography is paired with clean layouts to create a balance between the raw artistry of tattoo culture and the precision of graphic design. A striking, high-contrast color palette reinforces the book’s edgy yet approachable tone, making it an inviting resource for both seasoned tattoo enthusiasts and those new to the world of alternative design.
“Beyond the Needle” was created to demystify the tattooing world and highlight the art form’s emotional and cultural significance. Through this project, I aimed to not only educate but also empower readers to see tattoos and design as tools for personal expression, communication, and transformation.
